10 ways students can use an Android tablet

An Android tablet can be a great companion for a student. These devices are relatively inexpensive — you can splash out on a fancy model if you choose to — and quite powerful. The power comes not just from the hardware, but the incredible amount of freedom and flexibility that Android offers, especially if you’re learning to code.

As a student, there’s a lot you can do with Android tablets, and here are 10 things you can try to start with.

1. Organise your life

One of the best things about having a tablet on hand is that they can be excellent companions for organising things in your life. Be it school notes, reminders, a detailed calendar, or whatever else, tablets are always conveniently on hand.

Some apps you can use to get started are Google Calendar and Todoist.

2. Note-taking

Taking notes in a notebook is passé. Get yourself a tablet that supports a stylus, or perhaps one with a compact keyboard, and you can very conveniently take notes on your Android tablet. Being fully digital, these notes are incredibly easy to sort and organise, and some apps can even digitise your handwriting and make it searchable. Try EverNote and OneNote.

3. Mind maps

When starting on a project or even a learning session, mind maps are a great way to get your thoughts in order. Mind-mapping might not be a very familiar tool for everyone, but it’s easy to get into, and a tool you won’t be able to live without once you get the hang of it. Our favourite tool in this category is Miro.

4. Learning apps

Services like Udemy, Khan Academy, and even YouTube are a great source for learning materials. They have comprehensive courses available on a wide variety of subjects, and a tablet is a convenient second screen to learn on.

5. Study aids

While apps are a great source of material for learning, study aids like flash cards or quizzing tools can be excellent mechanisms for revisions and staying on your toes. Check out AnkiDroid Flashcards if you’re looking for a place to start.

6. Collaborate

Collaborating on projects, and even note-taking, can be very easy with an Android tablet beside you. Apps like Google Docs and Sheets are already built in, and you can even take advantage of shared mind-mapping apps and drawing tools to sketch, share, and organise ideas.

7. Meeting apps

While collaborating via documents apps, it’s also useful to be able to talk to friends, family, and even teachers directly, and on a larger screen than a phone’s. Meeting apps such as WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams, and Slack, are a great way to communicate with a larger group such as a classroom.

8. Develop an app

One of the nicest things about Android is that you don’t need to pay to be able to develop apps on it. Every Android device has a built-in developer mode, and if you’re a student learning to code, your tablet is already the perfect developer device for testing out code and app ideas.

9. Health monitoring

One thing all students tend to neglect is their health. Living on street food and snacks is fine for a short while, but long-term health requires an exercise routine and a good diet. A tablet is a great way to track your health and to make sure you maintain a strict exercise regimen alongside the one for studies.

10. Entertainment

We can’t talk about health and not discuss mental health as well. Entertainment, be it games or shows, are highly enjoyable on tablets. As long as this is done in moderation, with adequate time set aside for studies and other activities, a tablet is the perfect entertainment device.
